Solve the hard problems first. Find a way to get started on the long term solution, and build an incremental path to completion. In many cases, the innovative solution is difficult and foundational. Often, significant progress will be made only when work on the hard problem begins.

The power of picking up a small piece of trash

We pay attention to our environment and fix even the small things, rather than just walking by them. This is a practice we apply throughout Roblox. It’s an example of how we take responsibility and act like owners. It’s empowering to fix small things, and attention to detail is key to driving quality.

Do less, better

Doing less with focus helps drive product quality and innovation. There is a natural pull to do many things, features, etc. What generally makes a product great is a few things done incredibly well.

Examples where we reverted to “doing less”:

We have simplified and moved away from a two currency system (Tickets), and also a meta game (Player Points).
We tried many monetization tweaks to our original club-based economy. But ultimately Robux + In Game Purchases + Dev Ex was simpler, and 10x more powerful.
Our simulation engine originally had a bunch of higher level objects, like “Flag Stands”, that we eliminated in favor of API’s so developers could create them.

Managers at Roblox must be subject matter experts

Every role at Roblox requires deep domain expertise. And for managers, people leadership skills are also necessary. Managers at Roblox combine people leadership with their domain knowledge to effectively lead.

Encourage open dialog to drive innovation

Leaders are expected to set the tone by building trust and fostering a culture of authenticity. Create teams where every voice is heard, people feel respected, and contributions are recognized, so as to better drive innovation across Roblox.

Skip level communication to move faster

We support skip-level communication in all directions. When people have questions or feedback, they are encouraged to speak to those doing the actual work. This means it’s OK for an CL1 to reach out directly to a VP if they see something that can be improved in the organization. Recommendations, feedback, and asking tough questions are all encouraged. Take responsibility and use judgment in keeping relevant parties in the loop.

On time culture

We start and finish meetings on time. Being timely is a sign of respect to all attendees, reflecting the precision with which we build. This means if you are running a meeting, you should wrap up on time, and if a senior leader is late to a meeting, start the meeting without them whenever possible. We generally schedule meetings on the :00, :15, :30 and :45 to help people across the company synchronize, and we are promoting the idea of ending meetings on the :10, :25, :40, :55. The buffer allows folks to get to their next meeting on time.

Talk about “Our” teams

Not “The teams” or “My teams.” We (Roblox) have mutual ownership for our groups, teams and pods. Whenever possible, use “Our” language when referring to groups or teams or pods or other things at Roblox.

Send email at any time

At Roblox, it’s OK to send work-oriented email at any time, day or night. The sender is responsible for what types of messages are sent and when. This allows us to be flexible in how we work. The receiver can use judgment around when to read and respond to the communication.

Take responsibility for how you communicate with others:

Phone generally implies urgency
Slack generally implies “soon”
Email generally implies less urgency

Our swag highlights “Roblox”, without using the name or logo of a group, team, pod, or product. At times, we also give out swag that honors company-wide events, such as RDC.

Pre-reads as part of meeting time

We do pre-reads in the meeting as part of the total meeting time. There is no assumption that pre-reads are read asynchronously. Send pre-reads in advance when possible for those who may wish to browse in advance.
